QUINCY, MA – The UMPI Owls Baseball team (3-24) fell in doubleheader action on Saturday to Eastern Nazarene College (10-13). The Owls would get blanked in the first game 7-0 before a late inning surge would give the Lions a 9-4 win in the nightcap.
In game one, Cameron Fiorentino (SR, Uxbridge, MA) would throw a three-hit shutout, baffling the Owl bats all game long. He would record seven strikeouts and walk just one. Devin Haberstumpf (FR, Forest Hills, NY) would go four for four in the game. Connor Simpson (SO, Haverhill, MA) and Steve Pesce (FR, Harrison, NY) would each be responsible for two hits and two RBI.
Eastern Nazarene would jump out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of game two, collecting five hits and sending eight hitters to the plate in that frame. The Owls would respond with a lone run in the top of the second, as Jacob Powell (SO, Frankfort, ME) would line a single to left to drive in a run. After stranding two Lion runners in the second, UMPI would cut into the lead in the third after loading the bases with one out. A sacrifice fly from Solomon Fast (JR, Phillips, ME) and a Brad Patterson (FR, Harker Heights, TX) would pull the Owls within one run.
Eastern Nazarene would stay quiet offensively. The Owls would manufacture a run in the fifth after a Martin Egan (FR, East Bridgewater, MA). Egan would advance to second on a wild pitch, and then to third on a ground out to second. Patterson would tie the game with a sacrifice fly to left.
UMPI would find trouble in the bottom of the sixth as the Lions would load the bases with one out. A walk and a double to left would clear the bases, giving Eastern Nazarene all they would need to finish the game. The Owls would go down in order in the bottom of the seventh.
Egan would lead the Owls with two hits in three at bats, scoring two runs. Will Stinson (FR, Skowhegan, ME) would go two for four with a run scored.
