NORTHBOROUGH, MA – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Baseball team (0-10) ended their road trip dropping a tough doubleheader to the Newbury College Nighthawks (4-0). Both games would end with identical 6-5 scores.
In game one the Nighthawks continued a streak which they started the previous day, and scored in the first four innings, giving them ten consecutive innings in which they scored a run. The Owls would scratch together a run in the third, when Matt Cauchon (JR, Kingston, ME) would single in a run, but the Owls would find themselves down by five after four innings.
UMPI would get things going in the fifth, all with two outs. A couple of errors would allow the Owls to plate a run and Martin Egan (FR, East Bridgewater, MA) would drive in two with a sharply hit single. Jesus Garcia (JR, Jewett City, CT) would also single to drive in a run, pulling the Owls to within one.
The Owls would have opportunities late to tie or take the lead, but were unable to cash in. After a lead off single in the sixth, UMPI would leave a runner in scoring position, and a leadoff walk in the seventh would be left standing on second, as the Nighthawks would hold on to a 6-5 victory.
Jim McGorry (JR, Oakhurst, NJ) would pick up the win by pitching six innings and giving up nine hits and two walks. All five runs he gave up were unearned. Ethan Mick (SR, Medway, MA) would pick up the save in the seventh. Pitching on short rest, the Owls got a great effort from Tyler McLaughlin (JR, Fremont, CA). In six innings of work, he gave up five earned runs, walked just three, and struck out one.
Garcia would end up two for three with an RBI in the first game.
In game two, defensive woes would continue to haunt the Owls early on. A walk, an error, three stolen bases, and just one single would plate two runs for the Nighthawks in the first inning. Matt Curry (JR, Caribou, ME) would drive in a run in the third for the Owls to cut the lead in half.
With one out in the fourth and a runner on, Brad Patterson (FR, Harker Heights, TX) would drive a ball to the deepest part of the park, doubling and scoring a run. After a walk, Angel Morales (FR, Windsor, CT) would drive in a run with a groundball, and Garcia would single to score another. Curry would then line a double to left-center field to plate Garcia and the Owls would hold a 5-2 lead.
A leadoff triple in the fourth would allow the Newbury team to respond as Matthew Sobray (JR, Santa Clarita, CA) would score on a ground out. The Nighthawks would tie it in the fifth as Billy Stephen (JR, Windermere, FL) would triple, scoring a runner. Stephen would score on Sobray's single. The winning run would score in the sixth for Newbury, as with two outs it looked as though the Owls were going to get out of the inning. A high pop fly in the infield was misplayed, and an error would score a run from second. UMPI would not be able to get anything going in the seventh, falling by a score of 6-5.
Garcia finished two for two with a run scored, an RBI, and a walk in the nightcap. Egan would go two for four, while Curry would drive in a pair of runs.
The Owls next take the field on March 17th when they start a five game weekend series with Anna Maria College. Those games will be played at New England Baseball Complex.
