PHOENIXVILLE, PA – The University of Maine at Presque Isle (6-14) scored 45 runs in two games to cruise to a doubleheader victory over the Valley Forge University Patriots (1-14). The Owls would take the first one 25-6 and then shut out the home team in a 20-0 victory.
Game 1 – UMPI def. VFU – 25-6
The Owls would score in every inning, with the big inning coming in the second. Four hits and two walks would help plate six runs in that inning, with the big blow coming off the bat of senior Tommy Collins (Pembroke, ME). His two out double would score two and give UMPI a 9-1 lead. Good plate discipline would result in drawing 16 walks in the game, and 13 hits from the Owls would create an overwhelming deficit.
Andrew Bartlett (SR, Damariscotta, ME) would get the win on the mound, striking out eight, walking just two, and giving up only one earned run in seven innings.
Game 2 – UMPI def. VFU – 20-0
Sophomore Austin Bernier (Fort Fairfield, ME) would earn his first career collegiate win on the mound with a complete game shutout in game two. Bernier would strike out seven, walk just one, and scatter five hits to help the Owls to the doubleheader sweep.
Offensively the Owls would pound out 24 hits to route the Patriots in the nightcap. Solomon Fast (SO, Phillips, ME) would lead all hitters with a four for six effort, including three RBI. Matt Cauchon (SO, Kingston, MA), Saul Nunez (SO, Mapleton, ME), Jesus Garcia (SO, Jewett City, CT), and Collins would all collect three hits in the game.
The Owls are scheduled to play McDaniel College on Thursday afternoon in a single, nine inning game. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30.
