HAMPTON, VA – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls (1-3) rebounded from a poor performance in the first game of a doubleheader to take the second from The Apprentice School Builders (1-2). The host team would take the first game 24-5 before the Owls would fight back and get the second game by a score of 2-1.
Game 1 – The Apprentice School def. UMPI 24-5
Seven errors by the UMPI Owls would trigger an offensive onslaught by the Builders. Mistakes would cost the Owls throughout, spoiling a solid start from Tyler McLaughlin (SO, Fremont, CA). The Owls would eventually show some life, scoring three in the fifth, and two in the seventh, but the first game would belong to The Apprentice School.
Matt Curry (SO, Caribou, ME) would go 2 for 4 with two RBI.
Game 2 – UMPI def. The Apprentice School 2-1
Saul Nunez (SO, Mapleton, ME) would throw a complete game for the Owls, scattering five hits, while striking out four, and walking just three. The Owls would take the lead in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Brady Rowe (SR, Halifax, NS) would walk and go from first to third on a Matt Cauchon (SO, Kingston, MA) base hit, and then score after UMPI hitters drew two consecutive walks. Cauchon would score on a wild pitch, but the Owls would leave two on in the first and nine runners on in the game, setting up some drama in the bottom of the seventh inning.
After a base hit, the Builders would draw a walk to put the tying run on base. After a sacrifice bunt, moved the runners into scoring position, The Apprentice School would finally get on the board with a ground out to second base. With the tying run 90 feet from scoring, Nunez would slam the door shut, striking out his final hitter to seal the 2-1 victory for UMPI.
The Owls will conclude their spring trip tomorrow at The University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, VA. The doubleheader is scheduled for noon.
