Old Orchard Beach, ME – The Lesley Lynx swept a doubleheader, taking games 9-1 and 7-4 from the Owls at historic Old Orchard Beach Ballpark Saturday evening.

Game one: Lesley 9 UMPI 1          

The Owls struck first with one out in the first, Matt Cauchon reached base on an infield throwing error and advanced to second.  After an Adams Begos groundout that allowed Cauchon to take third on the throw, Cauchon scored on a wild pitch tossed by Lynx starter Bryan Hildebrand.

The Lynx answered in the next half inning as they plated four runs on five hits. Senior Ray Cohen knocked in the first run with a bases-loaded ground out before classmate Adam Ciampi followed with a ground out that knocked in Casey Blanchard. With two outs in the inning, Rob Parson and Gustavo Polidor connected for back-to-back RBI singles to put the Lynx up 4-1.

Cohen came to the plate with the bases full of Lynx once again in the top of the third and drove his second of three RBI on the day with a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Lesley would add their second run of the inning on an errant throw by the catcher as the visitors extended their lead to 6-1.

The Lynx tacked on three more in the top of seventh and won going away as Hildebrand scattered 7 Owls hits in his 5 innings of work to take his first career win.

Junior Tommy Collins led the way for the Blue & Gold, going a perfect 3-for-3 with a stolen base.

Freshman Matt Curry suffered the loss for UMPI as he went the distance, giving up nine runs (seven earned) on 17 hits while striking out a pair. 

Game two Lesley 7 UMPI 4

Owls senior starter Ghaz Sailors could not cool the hot Lesley bats, as the Lynx got out to a 5-0 lead after the second inning.

Lesley would add two more runs in the third to extend their lead to 7-0 before UMPI would finally get their offense going in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Sophomore DH Mitch Thayer drew a leadoff walk while Curry singled and Saul Nunez was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. After an infield fly accounted for the first out of the inning, Freshman Jesus Garcia delivered a two-run single to right field to plate Curry and Thayer.

Later in the inning, Cauchon sent a bases-loaded single through the left side of the infield to knock in Garcia and Nunez as the Owls cut the deficit to 7-4. 

The Owls would not take defeat easy, as they mounted comeback attempts in each of their last two at-bats, beginning with a two-out walk from Cauchon.  Freshman Cauchon stole second and Begos was hit by a pitch to give the Owls two on base. Thayer would end the rally as he grounded back to the pitcher to end the inning.

UMPI threatened once again in the bottom of the seventh as Curry and Saul Nunez each singles, but Blanchard escaped the jam with a slow tapper in front of the plate to keep the Owls scoreless in the inning.

Senior Sailors took the loss in her last game for the Owls giving up seven runs, but only one earned in her 2+ innings of hurling.  Andrew Bartlett did a fine job with 4.1 innings of scoreless relief, only giving up 3 hits and striking out 3.  Curry capped his first season of collegiate ball with a 3-for-3 game and Classmates Cauchon and Garcia each drove in two runs.

The Owls end the season 6-21.
