Senior Ghaz Sailors faced another challenge in her career Tuesday Evening toeing the mound for Maine-Presque Isle against NCAA Division I Maine. Sailors gave up only 4 earned runs in her 6 innings of work, as the Black Bears won 6-0 over the youthful Owls.
Sailors gave up 9 hits, but did not hurt the Owls chances of an upset by changing speeds, keeping the Black Bear hitter off stride and only walking two hitters. Sailors allowed only one extra base hit, a ringing double from the games hitting star Kevin Stypulkowski, that started a two-run rally in the second inning.
Down 3-0, Sailors would battle back in the third inning to hold Maine Scoreless with a 1-2-3 inning. Meanwhile the Owls could not mount much offensively after a first inning that saw the Owls load the bases.
The Owls used a leadoff single from Brady Rowe, a walk to Matt Cauchon and a single to left from Mitch Thayer to load the bases in the top of the first, but Black Bear starter Jeff Gelinas worked out of trouble to squash the attempted Owl rally. The Owls would not string hits together for the rest of the game, as the Black Bear Bullpen held the Owls to 3 singles and a Cauchon Double in their 7 innings of relief.
Thayer had two hits for the Owls and Nate Bower and Cauchon each pitched perfect innings of relief to back up the Sailors start.
The Owls will next head south to play Rivier Friday and Fisher for a four game set this weekend.
