White Team Wins Fall Baseball Classic

PRESQUE ISLE – The White Team used a big second inning to take the top spot in the final game of the Fall Classic inter squad scrimmage.

The White Team plated five runs in that second which was highlighted by two Tyler Seeley (FR, Presque Isle, ME) singles, the first driving in two runs and the second hit drove in one.  They would add two more in the fourth when Saul Nunez (FR, Presque Isle, ME) ripped a single to drive in two more, giving the White seven runs on the evening.  Andrew Bartlett (JR, Damariscotta, ME), Austin Bernier (FR, Fort Fairfield, ME), and Seeley all combined on the mound to shut out their opponents over five innings.  The strong performance on the night gave the White Team an overall score (total runs – team ERA) of 29.14.

The Gold Team entered the night with a slight lead and needed to keep pace with White if they wanted to pull out a series victory.  It wasn't until the third inning that they even threatened, but Jesus Garcia belted a double to dead center to start the inning.  He would later score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Nathan Cameron (FR, Epping, NH).

After a silent fourth, the pressure was on in the fifth and final inning.  Knowing they needed to put up runs, they managed to get their first two batters aboard on walks, and then load the bases with a fielding error and one out.  White Team's Bartlett was on the mound coincidentally and toughened up to squelch the threat, inducing an infield fly and a groundball to third to keep Gold off the board.  Garcia and Cameron combined to throw five scoreless innings of their own, with Garcia striking out three over three innings.  Gold ended the night and series with an overall score of 23.69.

The Blue Team needed to have a big night to catch up to the leaders, and on a night were pitchers were on their game, they weren't able to mount a series comeback.  Despite several hard hit "at 'em" balls, Blue only managed one hit on the night, a single off the bat of Chris Bernier (FR, Limestone, ME).  The Blue Team faced tough luck throughout the series on offense, and trailed the other two teams, finishing with an overall score of 12.13.

The winning White Team was captained by Junior Andrew Bartlett.  He was joined by Austin Bernier, Frank Nunez (FR, Presque Isle, ME), Saul Nunez, and Tyler Seeley.  Game five wrapped up the fall season for UMPI Baseball, and they go into the off-season with an optimistic outlook on the upcoming season.   "With this many new and young faces on the team, we weren't sure what to expect this fall," said Owls Head Coach Mike Pankow.

"There is obviously a learning curve involved when you have a number of young players trying to take the next step up in competition.  We have had some successes all around, and laid a solid groundwork for this team to build off of.  We need to have a good offseason work ethic and come back in January ready to keep building."
