ROCKY MOUNT, NC – The UMaine at Presque Isle baseball team opened their season against the North Carolina Wesleyan College Battling Bishops on Monday.
The Owls were the first to score in the top of the third when senior Cam Morrell singled to drive in Freshman Isaiah Straubel with two outs. The Bishops answered in the bottom half when Hayden Williams would score on a Chris Rogerson sacrifice fly and Ciro Norzagaray then hit a fly ball to left that would carry out for a two run home run.
Presque Isle starting pitcher Dylan Worster had to leave early due to injury and the Bishops would take advantage of six walks and six hits given up by Owls relief pitching. The Bishops pitching was stifling, striking out eight, and giving up just five hits, shutting down the Owls offense.
"The big lesson learned here is the importance of throwing strikes," said Coach Pankow of the team's effort. "Getting ahead in the count, making the opponent swing the bat, and not giving up free bases are the areas in which we need to improve. We executed extremely well defensively and could have done a few things better on offense, but their pitchers did a great job and you need to tip a hat to their effort as well."
The Owl's will deviate from their original schedule as teams in North Carolina and Virginia continue to recover from the recent snow storm. UMPI will face Guilford College in a double header on Tuesday, with the first pitch scheduled for 1 PM.
The Owls will return again to Guilford College on Wednesday for a single game at 2:30 PM. Live stats and video will be available at www.guilfordquakers.com.
