Seniors Alex Csiernik, Lucas Molloy and Shane Smith have been named captains for the first edition of Mike Pankow's UMaine-Presque Isle Baseball team. The trio was selected from among a senior laden group that established a school record for wins last season and made great inroads toward raising the level of competitiveness within a program that has one of the most challenging and strenuous schedules in Division III baseball each year.
"Being elected a captain is one of the biggest honors a player can receive," noted Pankow. "Their teammates voted these young men into this position because they see unique leadership qualities and trust them to speak on the teams behalf and represent the best interests of the team as whole in all matters."
"With such a senior heavy team the choice was tough which makes it even more of an honor for these outstanding young men." Added the first year mentor, "Alex, Shane, and Lucas are excellent team leaders on and off the field and great ambassadors for the Owl baseball program and UMPI."
The Owl Baseball program will start their 2014 season with a mid-February swing through the Carolinas during winter break. The first game is Monday, February 18 at North Carolina Wesleyan at 2pm, followed by a doubleheader with Guilford on February 19th before heading to Virginia to play 5 games in the southern Commonwealth.
