GOLD TAKES LEAD IN UMPI FALL BASEBALL CLASSIC

PRESQUE ISLE – The Owls Baseball team returned to action Thursday night with game three of their Fall Blue Gold Classic inter-squad scrimmage.

The White Team came into the night leading the series with nine runs in the first two games, but on this night could night find an answer against Junior pitcher Ghazaleh Sailors.  She managed to keep the White Team off balance, giving up just four hits and one walk in five innings.  The lone run against her came in the middle of the fifth, when Tommy Collins led off the inning with a bunt single and moved to third on an Andrew Bartlett single.  Brad Moscone got the lone RBI for the White Team by reaching first on a fielder's choice, barely beating out what could have been an inning ending double play.

Meanwhile the Gold Team got on the board early and often.  They scored two in the first with RBI singles from Mitch Thayer and Dylan Worster.  Worster would add another RBI single in the second.  In the fifth inning, the Gold Team would take advantage of two errors to create a big inning, scoring four runs, highlighted by a two RBI single from Josiah Brazier.  Worster would add another RBI in the sixth with a sacrifice fly, and the Gold team would bring in eight runs on the night, the biggest offensive output in the series so far.

The Blue Team entered the night in second place with a total of five runs.  They got on the board in the top of the second when senior Cam Morrell knocked in freshman Brandon LeHay with a single and later scored on a fielding error.  Sailors would get an RBI in the third with a sacrifice fly that scored Alex Csiernik despite a controversial call at the plate.

Though the Blue team collected nine hits, including multi-hit games from Csiernik, (two for five with a run scored), Morrell (two for five with a double, RBI, and a run scored), and Sailors (two for four with an RBI), they would leave nine runners on throughout the night and drop into third place.

Sophomore Andrew Bartlett and Senior Jordan Perry also got starts on the mound, and both had solid performances, each giving up just one earned run.  Neither got enough help from their defense as nine of the twelve runs scored on the night were unearned.

The Gold Team's offensive outburst puts them in the lead of the Fall Classic with twelve runs overall.  The White Team finds themselves in second with ten runs scored, and the Blue Team follows closely with eight runs.  The conclusion of the series will come on Tuesday, October 22, weather permitting.  The double header is scheduled for a first pitch time of 6:30pm at Presque Isle High School Field.
