SeaWolves Take Two From Owls

(SOUTH PORTLAND, ME) -- After scoring 26 runs in two games against Southern Maine Community College last Monday, the University of Maine-Presque Isle baseball team managed only two runs in the rematch doubleheader in South Portland on Friday.  SMCC swept the twinbill 3-1 and 4-1.

With the wins, SMCC evens the season series with UMPI (2-2) and improves to 17-19-1 overall.  They remain at 7-1 in the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC).

Presque Isle is now 7-20 in 2013.  They will begin a three-game set at Eastern Maine Community College on Saturday with a single game beginning 5pm.  The two squads will then play a doubleheader on Sunday with first pitches at 11am and 1pm.

Game 1:  SMCC 3, OWLS 1

WP-  D. French
 LP-  D. Worster (2-3)

The opener saw a pitchers' dual between SMCC's Daniel French and UMPI's Dylan Worster (Jr./Howland, ME).  Both hurlers threw complete games in the 7-inning affair.  Both scattered six hits and struck out four batters.

While Worster worked in and out of trouble early, giving up single runs in three of the first four frames, French coasted until the fifth.  Up 3-0, French ran into trouble as the Owls finally were able to push a run across vs. the freshman hurler on an RBI hit by 2B Justin Bergeron (Jr./Tiverton, RI).

French was able to keep the damage to a run and came back to shut down UMPI in the 6th and 7th.

Bergeron collected two of Presque Isle's hits.  CF Stephen Thorne (Sr./Dalhousie, NB) reached base three times on a hit and a pair of walks.

Game 2:  SMCC 4, OWLS 1

WP-  Mongiat
 LP-  A. Bartlett  (1-4)

In another pitcher's dual, Owls' starter Andrew Bartlett (Fr./Damariscotta, ME) looked to earn the split as he held the SeaWolves scoreless through five innings.  In the top of the 4th, the offense staked Bartlett out to a lead as 3B Daniel Lewis (Jr./Gardner Mines, NS) crossed the plate on an RBI at bat from Thorne.

SMCC mounted a rally in the 6th by scoring four runs with the big blow coming in the form of a 2 RBI base knock from  Nate McKeown.  SeaWolves' starter Corey Mongiat kept the Owls off the board in the top of the 7th to preserve the win and give his team the sweep.

Southern Maine stole four bases against Presque Isle pitching including a pair from CF Michael Calabrese.

Owls' CF Logan McLaughlin (Fr./Mars Hill, ME) collected a pair of base knocks to lead UMPI offensively.
