9th Inning Rally Falls Short as Owls Drop 2-1 Decision

(Nashua, NH) --  In their 2013 home opener, the Rivier University Baseball team outpitched the University of Maine – Presque Isle Owls tonight as they won 2-1 in front of about 100 people inside of Historic Holman Stadium.

Rivier improves to 4-14 while UMPI falls to 4-13.

The Owls receive a terrific pitching performance from Adam Geel (Fr./Calais, ME). The freshman right-hander tossed 7.2 innings allowing just two earned runs while striking out six.

Geel's performance was bested however by Raider starter Nicholas Pica (Hampstead, NH).  Pica was very effective allowing four hits while striking out six over his six innings of work. Teammate Edward Soucie (South Ryegate, VT) and sophomore Lucas Palma (Bristol, CT) each tossed scoreless frames as they earned holds before sophomore Jesse Turcotte (Tyngsboro, MA) ran into some trouble in the 9th.

Down to their last two outs and in a 2-0 hole, the Owls rallied.  With one down, Alex Csiernik (Jr./Hamilton, Ontario) drew his team leading 10th walk of the season.  Andrew Carter (So./Carlo, NB) followed with a single to put runners on 1st and 3rd.  A Justin Bergeron (Jr./Tiverton, RI) RBI sacrifice fly cut the deficit in half, 2-1.  Finally Turcotte was able to end the rally and notch the save by inducing a game-ending groundout.

Offensively Me-Presque Isle was led by 1B Carlos Villoria (Sr./Caracas, Venezuela) and Tanner Marshall (Fr/Cleburne, TX) who each had two-hit nights.

Maine-Presque Isle will travel to Lynn, Massachusetts and face Fisher College in a four game set with the first two tomorrow afternoon.  Games will begin at 3pm and 5pm.
