Averett Bests Owls, 15-5

DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University won its fifth game in a row as the Cougars cruised past the University of Maine at Presque Isle 15-5 on Wednesday afternoon at Owen-Fulton Field.

Averett (8-2) broke the game open in the second inning when the Cougars scored nine runs on nine hits, two errors and a walk. Averett sent 14 players to the plate in the frame, with sophomore Kevin Alvarez hitting an RBI single and an RBI double.

Averett senior left-hander Travis Coates (2-0) gave up no hits or runs in three innings of scheduled work to earn the win.  Of the five runs scored by Maine-Presque Isle (1-4), only one was earned.  Jordan Perry (Jr./Baileyville, ME) (0-2) started and took the loss for the Owls.  Perry gave up 8 hits and 9 runs (6 earned) in 1.2 innings.

Designated hitter Ted Walker (Jr./Caribou, ME) and 3B Adam Geel (Fr./Calais, ME) collected 2 hits a piece to highlight Presque Isle's offense.

UMPI continues play tomorrow when they play at Ferrum (VA) College.  First pitch will be at 4pm.  The game will be the 6th in a stretch of eight games in eight days for the Owls.
