Canton Ruins Owls' First Home Games

(PRESQUE ISLE, ME)  --  Rain, snow, winds, and winter-like temperatures, could not keep the University of Maine-Presque Isle baseball team from playing their first home games of the season.  After playing 32 consecutive road contests, the Owls were determined to get some "home cooking" on Saturday when they hosted SUNY-Canton.  The Roos, however, treated their hosts about as well as Mother Nature, taking a pair of games from Presque Isle, 17-11 and 9-3.

The games were played at the baseball diamond at Presque Isle High School.  Coming into the afternoon the Owls had won 6 of its previous 7 games, however with the day's losses fell to 10-24.  Canton, playing in its first game since April 12th, improved to 7-25.

The two teams will play another doubleheader on Sunday starting at 12pm.

Game #1:  Canton 17, UMPI 11
The Roos scored early and often on Owls' starter Dylan Worster (So./Howland, ME), who was not helped by 5 errors committed by his defense.  Down 5-0 after the first two innings, the Owls played themselves out of the game in the 3rd.  After Worster easily retired the first two Roo batters, the offense rattled off 8 hits and scored 8 runs with two outs.  Five of those runs were of the unearned variety as a pair of UMPI errors kept the nightmare inning going.  Finally UMPI coach Leo Saucier was forced to summon Lucas Molloy (So./Lovell, ME) from the bullpen to retire Dylan Casselman on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded to stop the bleeding.

Through six innings UMPI's bats were quiet as they only managed 2 hits while Canton built a 17-0 lead.  It was not until their last ups in the 7th that the Owls offense came alive.

In the 7th, Presque Isle sent 15 batters to the plate, scoring 11 runs on 7 base hits.  Cam Morrell (So./Harpswell, ME) and Stephen Thorne (Jr./Dalhousie, New Brunswick) each had 2 hits during the barrage with Thorne collecting RBIs on each of his base knocks.

The 11 runs marked the most scored by UMPI in an inning this season.

SUNY's Josh Soffer pitched 5 innings of shutout, 2-hit ball to earn the win.  He struck out five.  Worster could not get through the 8-run third inning in taking the loss.  Ghazaleh Sailors (Fr./Santa Barbara, CA) was the only UMPI pitcher that enjoyed some success on hill as she closed out the game's final 3.1 innings and giving up only one run.

Game #2:  Canton 9, UMPI 3
Middle innings again were the downfall for the Owls as four Canton runs in the 3rd and five more in the 4th turned a 1-0 UMPI advantage into a 9-1 deficit.  From there, the Roos survived late single runs from Presque Isle in the 8th and 9th to cruise to a 9-3 victory in game two.

Canton starter James Amelotte earned the win as he carried a no-hitter into the 5th inning before Jordan Duffy broke through with a 2-out single to left field.  UMPI starter Jake Fillebrown (Jr./Stoneham, ME) cruised through the first two innings but ran into trouble in the third and fourth.  Once again the UMPI defense was unable to help its pitcher, committing 3 errors in the innings.

Owls shortstop Jordan Duffy (Jr./Fort Augustus P.E.I., Canada) was 2-3 with a run scored in the nightcap.
