(WALTHAM, MA) -- After two scoreless frames, the University of Maine-Presque Isle baseball team erupted for 13 unanswered runs over the next three innings to open up a 13-0 lead. UMPI would go on to a 13-3 win in seven innings over Lasell University on Friday night. For the Owls it was the team's third straight victory as they moved to 7-21 on the season. The Lasers fall to 11-23.
Dylan Worster (So./Howland, ME) struggled a bit in the 7th, giving up 3 runs, but finished the game out for his 3rd win of the season. Worster scattered 11 hits and struck out 4.
The Owls opened up the scoring in the third inning after two were out and nobody on. An error by the Lasers 2B Josh Sullivan on a grounder by Stephen Thorne (Jr./Dalhousie, NB) opened up the floodgates to four UMPI runs. After Shane Smith (So./Farmington, ME) drew a walk, three straight Owls knocked RBI basehits: Jordan Duffy (Jr./Fort Augustus P.E.I, Canada) an RBI single, Carlos Villoria (Jr./Caracas, Venezuela) a 2-RBI double, and Ted Walker (So./Caribou, ME) an RBI single.
UMPI added two more 2-out runs in the 4th inning, this time without the benefit of a hit. All it took was 5 walks, 3 stolen bases, a SAC bunt, a wild pitch, and one passed ball.
Up 6-0 heading into the fifth, the Owls put the game away with a 5 run frame. The big blow came off the bat of Walker, who drove in his second run of the game with his second hit in as many innings.
Walker finished the day 2-4 with 2 RBI. Villoria was 1-4 and led UMPI with 3 RBI.
The Owls will look to extend their modest winning streak in Vermont this weekend as they travel to play a pair of doubleheaders with the Knights from Vermont Tech on Saturday and Sunday. Tomorrow's games will begin at 1pm.
