Babson Tops Owls, 13-1

(BABSON PARK, MA) -- The Babson College baseball team scored nine runs in the second inning and junior starter Steve Shaddock (Milford, Mass.) went six strong innings as the Beavers defeated visiting UMaine-Presque Isle, 13-1, in a non-conference tilt at Govoni Field on Saturday.

Babson (18-11) has now won four in a row and eight of its last nine, while the Owls (4-21) lost for the second time in as many days.

The Beavers put the game away in the second, scoring nine times on seven hits and three walks. After senior captain Travis Jonasson (Needham, Mass.) led off with a walk and senior Billy Miller (Sagamore  Beach, Mass.) followed with a base hit, junior Conor Kortmann (Manalapan, N.J.) and sophomore Brendan Collins (Ablington, Mass.) recorded back-to-back RBI-singles to give the hosts a 2-0 lead. Junior John Botelho (Tempe, Ariz.) then laced a two-run double to center and scored on a single to left by first-year Rob Caggiano (Medford, Mass.) to make it 5-0 Babson.

Following walks by juniors Joe Nixon (Foxboro, Mass.) and Chris Kucher (Westwood, Mass.), Jonasson plated two more with a double, and Miller capped the inning with a two-run homer to center - his third of the year - to give Shaddock (2-1) a comfortable 9-0 cushion.

That would be more than enough for the Beavers' junior righthander, who went six innings and allowed just one run on six hits, walking none and striking out five. The only blemish on his line came in the top of the fourth, when Owls' sophomore Ted Walker (So./Caribou, ME) hit a one-out single to left, moved to second on a Cam Morrell (So./Harpswell, Maine) single two batters later, and scored when Shane Smith (So./Farmington, Maine) followed with a base-hit to center.

Babson tacked on three more in the bottom half of the fifth, courtesy of a leadoff homer by Kortmann - his first of the season - and a two-run double to right center by junior Billy Hocking (Duxbury, Mass.). Junior Pat Matvichuk (Middleton, Mass.) then finished off the Beavers' scoring in the seventh, when he drove in Caggiano with a single to right.

Miller, Kortmann, and Botelho each finished with two hits, two runs scored, and two RBIs for Babson, whiel Caggiano added two hits, two runs, and one driven in. Sophomore Zachary Price (Franklin, Mass.) tossed two scoreless innings of relief before giving way to first-year Chris Sirois (Acton, Mass.), who struck out two of the three batters he faced in a perfect ninth.

Pitcher Jordan Perry (So./Baileyville, ME) started and took the loss for UMPI, dropping his record to 1-4 on the year. Morrell chipped in with three hits at the plate for the Owls.

UMPI will remain in Boston on Sunday to face Fisher College.  First game of the twinbill will begin at 12pm.
