4-Run Ninth Dooms Owls
(ST. DAVIDS, PA) -- Gary Moses pitched four innings of one-hit ball in relief, and the bats came to life late as Eastern University baseball scored four times with nobody out in the ninth to complete a come-from-behind 9-8 win over University of Maine- Presque Isle.
Eastern trailed 7-2 going into the bottom of the fourth, and the Eagles, whose two runs had come on bases-loaded walks, had yet to get a hit. Eastern left the bases loaded in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings.
UMPI built their lead thanks to a 4-run 4th inning behind 2-run basehits from Justin Bergeron (So./Tiverton, RI) and Stephen Thorne (Jr./Dalhousie, NB). Bergeron finished the afternoon 2-4 with 3 RBI.
The Presque-Isle pitchers struggled to find the plate throughout the day. Eastern hitters reached base by walk 14 times. With the bases loaded and one out in the fifth, Dillon Schwartzer singled through the left side to drive in one, but a strike out and a Renauro line drive at the third baseman ended that rally.
Renauro doubled to lead off the eighth. He scored two batters later from third on a deep drive from Greg DeSarro that CF Thorne caught while running into the fence.
After Moses made it through a perfect ninth, the Eagles loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth on a pair of walks off Owls' reliever Andy Brown (So./Princeton, ME) and a seeing-eye single from Schwartzer through the left side. André Butler drew a walk to drive in a run and move Schwartzer, the tying run, into scoring position.
After getting ahead in the count against UMPI reliever Jake Fillebrown (Jr./Stoneham, ME), Renauro chopped a base hit through the left side to plate a pair of runners.
With Renauro on first and Butler at third, the Owls elected to pitch to Prager. The junior first baseman has struck out only once in 74 plate appearances, and he hacked a 3-1 pitch through the drawn in infield for the walk-off win.
UMPI continues their spring break trip tomorrow when they travel to Center Valley, PA to take on De Sales University. Live stats of the game will be provided by the home team and can be followed by clicking here.
