(Chestertown, MD) -- After dropping the opening game of a doubleheader again Washington College (MD), 18-0, the University of Maine-Presque Isle baseball team did everything they could to earn a split.
The Owls went into the top of the 7th inning in a 2-0 hole in the nightcap. That is when Carlos Villoria (Jr./Caracas, Venezuela) and Ted Walker (So./Caribou, ME) gave UMPI some life by leading off the final frame with singles. After a Cam Morrell (So./Harpswell, ME) sacrifice bunt put runners at 2nd and 3rd with just one out, Alex Csiernik (So./Hamilton, Onterio) struck out reducing the Owls to their final out. Jake Fillebrown (Jr./Stoneham, ME), whose pitching kept UMPI in the game up to that point, helped his own cause with an RBI single up the middle and cutting the Shoremen lead in half, 2-1. Fillebrown quickly stole 2nd putting two runners in scoring position before Justin Bergeron (So./Tiverton, RI) grounded out to shortstop to end the rally.
Fillebrown pitched wire-to-wire for the Owls going 6 innings, giving up 6 hits, 2 earned runs, walking 3 and striking out 2. The hard-luck loser fell to 0-3 on the season as the Owls moved to 1-12.
In the opener, the Shoremen (14-2) jumped all over the Owls early scoring 7 runs in the bottom of the first. UMPI did not help their cause by committing 5 errors in the contest. Starter Jordan Perry (So./Baileyville, ME) could not make it out of the first inning and took the loss and dropped to 0-2.
UMPI continues its spring break road trip on Monday when they travel to Wesley (DE) College for a single game. First pitch is set for 3:30pm.
