Owls Baseball Swept in Conference Play at SUNY Canton
CANTON, New York - The University of Maine at Presque Isle baseball team was swept by SUNY Canton in all three games of a Sunrise Conference match-up on Friday afternoon. The Roos of Canton won the opener 8-4, rallied for a 5-2 win in game two and then shut out the Owls 6-0 in the final game. With the three loses, the Owls move to 6-25 on the season and 2-9 in conference play.
The Roos and the Owls were scheduled to play one doubleheader on Friday and another on Saturday, but with the forecast of rain on Saturday, it was decided to play a triple-header on Friday afternoon.
In game one on Saturday afternoon, SUNY Canton posted four runs in the bottom of the first inning and four more in the bottom of the third to capture their eight run game. The Owls plated one run in the top of the second, and scored one more in the sixth before rallying with two runs in the seventh, but came short in the 8-4 decision.
UMPI scattered nine hits in 29 at bats, compared to only seven earned by Canton; however, the Owls committed four errors in the loss.
The Owls were led by freshman DH Ted Walker (Caribou, ME) who finished 3-for-4 including one RBI; freshman 2b Cam Morrel (Harpswell, ME) went 2-for-3 and plated a run, while sophomore 1b Carlos Villoria (Caracas, Venezuela) continues his strong offensive efforts for the Owls with a 2-for-3 performance, while driving in two RBIs. Freshman catcherAlex Csiernik (Hamilton, Ontario) tallied two hits in the game to help his team.
Freshman Jordan Perry (Baileyville, ME) earned the loss in the game from the mound; Perry allowed
seven earned runs, while striking out two and walking four batters in 3.1 innings of work.Andy Brown (Princeton, ME) saw relief for the Owls.
In the second game of the day, the Owls held a 2-1 lead after four-innings of play thanks to a two-run third inning; but the Roos rallied in the bottom of the fifth with four runs to earn the 5-2 lead and eventually victory.
The Owls were kept to just three hits in the ballgame, while committing four fielding errors. Senior captain Corey Harding (Plymouth, ME) and freshman Seth Cote (Otis, ME) both led their UMPI team in a 1-for-3 effort, while each plated a run in the game. Freshman Josiah Brazier (Searsport, ME) also earned a hit in the loss.
Freshman hurler Dylan Worster (Howland, ME) picked up the loss for UMPI; in five innings of work, Worster allowed four earned runs, while striking out three and walking just one batter. Ryan Thompson (East Millinocket, ME) and Stephen Thorne (Dalhousie, NB) saw relief for the Owls.
In the nightcap, SUNY Canton built a 5-0 lead after three innings and tacked on one more run in the bottom of the sixth inning to earn the 6-0 victory.
The Roos scattered nine hits in the game compared to UMPI's three base hits. Both teams committed just one error in the contest. Walker, Csiernik, and Thorne each earned a hit in the game to lead their Owl team.
Sophomore Anthony Batchelder (Enfield, ME) was given the loss from the mound; Batchelder allowed five earned runs in 5.1 innings of work, while striking out three and walking one. Brown came in as relief in the closing inning of play.
The Owls were rained out for Saturday's single conference game against SUNY Canton; the team returns to action on Friday, April 29th as they head to the Sunrise Conference tournament scheduled to be held at Fraser Field in Lynn, Mass. Game times and schedule updates coming soon.
