Owls Baseball Split in Doubleheader at Farmington

WATERVILLE, Maine - The University of Maine at Presque Isle baseball team notched a 12-6 win over the University of Maine at Farmington in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Thomas College's Allen Ryan Field. The Owls fell short in the first game, losing a 6-2 decision to the Beavers. With the split, UMPI moves to 4-19 on the season.

The Owls used a monster five-run sixth inning effort, then followed up with three more in the seventh to earn the 12-6 victory over the Beavers. 

The game was scoreless through the first inning of play; the Owls struck in the top of the second plating four runs. Alex Csiernik (Hamilton, Ontario) reached on a fielding error; sophomore Matt Nadeau (Auburn, ME) singled through the right side for the game's first base hit. Senior Brian Andrews (Fort Fairfield, ME)singled to shortstop, loading the bases; then Stephen Thorne (Dalhousie, NB) earned a two-RBI single to left field. Senior captain Corey Harding (Plymouth, ME) followed suit with a RBI single to right field helping the Owls earn the eventual 4-0 lead.

The Beavers answered in the bottom of the same inning, plating five runs to take the 5-4 lead. But the Owls rallied in the top of the sixth, scoring five runs on four hits and two fielding errors; UMPI tallied three more hits in the top of the sixth to take the 12-5 lead. UMF battled to earn one more run in a final seveth inning attempt, but fell short as the Owls earned the 12-6 victory over UMF.

Sophomore first baseman Carlos Villoria (Caracas, Venezuela) smacked two singles, a double and
 two RBIs to lead his UMPI team in the win; freshman DHTed Walker (Caribou, ME)doubled with an RBI, while Matt Nadeau (Auburn, ME) earned two singles and plated a run. Thorne singled and drove in two runs, while Harding singled, plated a run, and earned an RBI. Csiernik, Seth Cote (Otis, ME), Andrews, and Cam Morrell (Harpswell, ME) each earned a single in the game, whileAndrew Carter (Charlos, NB)singled and drove in a run. 

The Owls scattered 13 hits, while committing four fielding errors in the win.

Owls freshman pitcher Anthony Batchelder (Enfield, ME) hurled a complete game, allowing six runs on 11 hits, while striking out none and walking just one batter.

In the first game of the day, UMF jumped out to the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of play earning the run on one hit. The Owls answered back in the top of the third inning, when freshman Shane Smith (Farmington, ME) gave his team a 2-1 edge with a two-RBI single. Freshman shortstop Justin Bergeron (Tiverton, RI) reached base on a fielding error by the Beaver shortstop to kick off the inning. Then sophomore Stephen Thorne singled through the left side of the diamond to eventually place runners at second and third. Smith followed with a two-RBI single up the middle giving the Owls the 2-1 lead.

Farmington answered in the bottom of the fifth with two runs, then plated three more in the sixth to gain the eventual 6-2 victory.

Freshman hurler Jordan Perry (Baileyville, ME) took the loss for UMPI, allowing nine hits, three walks and four strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work. Evan Kingsbury (Frankfort, ME) came in as relief for his Owl squad.

Andrew Carter also singled in the game, as the Owls scattered three hits, while committing five errors.

UMaine Presque Isle returns to action on Saturday, April 16 and Sunday, April 17, as the Owls head to Vermont Technical College in a two-day doubleheader conference match-up against the Green Knights. Saturday's first game is set to start at 1:00 pm.
