Baseball Earns Conference Split at Vermont Tech

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vermont- The University of Maine at Presque Isle baseball team earned a 2-2 split on the weekend against Vermont Technical College in Sunrise Conference play. With the two wins and two losses garnered, the Owls move to 6-21 on the season and 2-6 in conference play.

On Saturday afternoon, UMaine Presque Isle soared to the 10-5 victory over the Green Knights. Sophomore first baseman Carlos Villoria (Caracas, Venezuela) led the charge with a 4-for-5 effort from the plate, tallying four singles, two RBI's, and scoring two runs in the win. Freshman shortstop Justin Bergeron (Tiverton, RI) finished 3-for-4 with three singles and three plated runs, while catcher Matt Nadeau (Auburn, ME) and senior captain Corey Harding (Plymouth, ME) each singled twice. Freshman second baseman Cam Morrell (Harpswell, ME) doubled, singled, and drove in a run to help his team.

Sophomore hurler Jake Fillebrown (Stoneham, ME) earned the win from the mound in five innings of work; Fillebrown struck out seven and allowed four earned runs, while walking one batter. Evan Kingsbury (Frankfort, ME) came in to close the game in the bottom of the sixth.

The Owls scattered 16 hits in the win, while committing three errors in the field.

In the second game of the day's doubleheader, UMPI jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first
 inning, then plated a big six-run third inning followed by four runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to capture the 15-8 win over Vermont Tech.

Villoria had another strong performance from the plate, finishing 2-for-3 including two doubles and two plated runs; Carlos also drew two walks in the victory. Freshman Andrew Carter (Charlos, NB) singled twice, scored three runs and earned three RBI's, while freshman outfielder Josiah Brazier (Searsport, ME) singled twice and drove in three runs in the win. Freshman catcher Alex Csiernik (Hamilton, Ontario)singled twice with two RBIs and sophomore Stephen Thorne (Dalhousie, NB) earned two singles with one RBI to help his team.

Andy Brown (Princeton, ME)earned the win from the mound in the game; in 3.1 innings on of work, Brown struck out five, walked two and allowed one earned run in the victory. Corey Harding started the game for the Owls, while Ryan Thompson (East Millinocket, ME) closed the game in the bottom of the seventh.

In the first game of Sunday's doubleheader, the Green Knights used a big fourth inning effort to take the 8-3 lead over the Owls, then tallied two more in the fifth and two runs in the sixth en route to a 12-6 victory over UMPI. The Owls rallied in the sixth, plating three runs to bring the lead to within four runs at 10-6, but came up short in the remaining innings of play.

Seth Cote (Otis, ME) led the Owls from the plate in the game; Cote singled, doubled and drove in two runs in the loss. Freshman outfielder Shane Smith (Farmington, ME), DH James Cirell (Bingham, ME), and Andrew Carter each earned a single in the effort.

Dylan Worster (Howland, ME)picked up the loss for the Owls from the mound, while Kingsbury, Thorne, and Thompson all saw relief in the game for UMPI

In the final game of the weekend, the Owls battled to a 6-1 loss against VTC to earn the weekend split. UMPI held the 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth, but with one out in the inning, the Knights plated three runs to take a 3-1 lead. Vermont Tech scored another three in the bottom of the sixth, while keeping the Owl bats silent to capture the 6-1 victory.

Freshman hurler Andrew Carter earned the loss for his Owl team from the mound in a complete game pitched. Carter struck out nine batters, while walking none in a solid performance.

On the offensive end, UMPI was led by Carlos Villoria who singled and plated the lone run for the Owls in the game. Freshman DH Ted Walker (Caribou, ME) earned an RBI single in the fourth to score Villoria, while Smith and senior Brian Andrews (Fort Fairfield, ME) both singled in the loss.

The Owls return to action on Thursday, April 21st as the team travels to Colby-Sawyer College of New London, NH for a single game non-conference contest. Game time is at 3:00 pm.
