Owls Split Doubleheader With Gordon College; Earns Second Win

WENHAM, Mass. - The University of Maine at Presque Isle baseball team earned a split in a doubleheader against Gordon College on Monday afternoon at J. Tec White Field. With the win and loss, the Owls move to 2-13 on the year.

The Owls earned their second win of the season in the second game of the doubleheader in a 4-3 thriller. Freshman pitcher, Andrew Carter (Charlos, NB) was solid on the mound as he lead the charge against the Flying Scots. Carter completed seven innings from the mound, allowing three earned runs in nine innings of work. Andrew struck out four batters, while walking six in the Owl victory.  Andy Brown (Princeton, ME) came in as relief witih nobody out and two runners on in the bottom of the eighth inning;  Brown struck out the first two hitters he faced and earned the third out on the ground out to second.  Andy then pitched the ninth to earn the win.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the second, when Gordon had a solid three-run inning. UMPI answered with one run in the top of the third when Stephen Thorne (Dalhousie, NB) singled and plated Seth Cote (Otis, ME) who had reached base on a walk. 

The Owls rallied in the top of the fifth inning, scoring two runs on three hits. Cote singled to open the inning, followed by an Evan Kingsbury (Frankfort, ME) single. Carlos Villoria (Caracas, Venezuela) earned an RBI single, scoring Cote. Thorne then reached on a fielder's choice, earning another RBI to tie the game at 3-3. The game remained tied and was forced into extra innings.

Finally in the top of the ninth inning, with two outs on the board for UMPI, Cote drew a walk to reach base. Kingsbury came to plate and earned the game-winning RBI double to give the Owls the 4-3 lead. UMPI held the Scots scoreless in the bottom of the ninth to earn the win.

The Owls were lead by ss Evan Kingsbury, who finished 3-for-4 in the game, including the big game-winning RBI double. Thorne, Villoria, and Cote all singled in the win; Cote plated three runs in the effort.

In the first game of the afternoon, the Owls battled to a 6-4 loss. The game went back and forth between both ball clubs, before the Scots solidified the lead
 and eventually victory.


Gordon College jumped out to the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. UMPI answered back with two runs of their own in the top of the second; Corey Harding (Plymouth, ME) earned a walk, followed by Justin Bergeron (Tiverton, RI) who also drew a walk. SS Matt Nadeau (Auburn, ME) then earned a big two-RBI single to take the 2-1 lead.

The flying Scots scored two more runs off two hits in the top of the third inning to take the 3-2 lead. The Owls rattled off a run in the top of the fourth to tie the game; Harding opened up the inning by reaching first on an error by 3b, and then stole second. Bergeron drew another walk, followed by a base-hit single by Stephen Thorne, which loaded the bases with two outs. The next batter, Shane Smith (Farmington, ME) drew another walk, earning an RBI to tie the game. Gordon scored two more runs in the fifth.

The Owls rallied in the top of the sixth, but came up short earning one run on one hit. Chris Cosenze (Old Town, ME) drew a walk to open the inning; then Nadeau earned an RBI double to score Cosenze. The Scots plated one more run in the bottom of the inning to earn the eventual 6-4 win.

The Owls earned six hits in the game and were lead by Nadeau who finished 2-for-3 from the plate with three RBI's. Thorne and Ted Walker (Caribou, ME) singled, while Carlos Villoria went 2-for-4 with two singles.

Freshman hurler, Jordan Perry (Baileyville, ME) earned the loss from the mound in six innings of work. Perry allowed six earned runs, while striking out two and walking three batters in the effort.

The Owls return to the field on Friday, April 1st, as they head to Daniel Webster College for a 3:00 pm match-up.
