CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts - The University of Maine at Presque Isle baseball team picked up their third win of the season on Friday evening in a 5-0 shutout victory against Lesley University at Trum Field. With the win, the Owls improve to 3-14 on the season.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth when UMPI opened the game up with four plated runs. Ted Walker (Caribou, ME) cracked open the Owl inning with a single to left field, he then stole second. Evan Kingsbury (Frankfort, ME) and Josiah Brazier (Searsport, ME) both drew a walk to load the bases with one out in the inning. The next batter, Stephen Thorne (Dalhousie, NB), reached first on an error by the pitcher, scoring Walker unearned as the Owls plated the first run of the game. Corey Harding (Plymouth, ME) followed up with a strike out from the plate, then Carlos Villora (Caracas, Venezuela)reached first on an error by the Lesley second baseman, which scored Brazier and Kingsbury to give UMPI the 3-0 advantage.
The Owls struck again in the top of the fifth inning, as Matt Nadeau (Auburn, ME) earned a solid double to right center field. Walker followed with a RBI single to left field, plating Nadeau. The Owls were forced
out of the inning with one runner left on base, while earning the 4-0 lead over the Lynx.
In the top of the ninth, Justin Bergeron (Tiverton, RI) singled with two outs in the inning. Sophomore Jake Fillebrown (Stoneham, ME) then smacked a big RBI double to left field, scoring Bergeron to give the Owls the 5-0 lead and eventually victory.
Freshman pitcher, Dylan Worster (Howland, ME), earned the shutout win for the Owls; Worster gave up four hits on the night, while striking out five batters and walking only one in a complete nine-inning effort.
The Owls rattled off nine hits in the game, while committing four fielding errors.
UMaine Presque Isle returns to action on Saturday afternoon as they open their Sunrise Conference season away at Fisher College of Boston in a doubleheader matchup. The first game is scheduled to begin at 12:00 noon.
