Owl Baseball Drops Two at Ramapo College

MAHWAH, New Jersey - The University of Maine at Presque Isle baseball team finally returned to the diamond today after an unfortunate week of inclement weather. The Owls were at Ramapo College for an afternoon non-conference doubleheader at Jeff Maund Field. UMPI dropped both games 15-1 and 13-1. With the loses, the Owls move to 1-10 on the season, while the Roadrunners improve to 11-2. 

In the first game of the afternoon, the Owls battled to a 15-1 decision in seven innings. UMPI was down 5-0 before scoring their lone run in the top of the third inning, which was unearned.  Ramapo came back to score 10 more runs in the game en route to the win. 

UMPI was lead by senior captain,Corey Harding (Plymouth, ME),who finished 1-for-1 in the game, while 2b Justin Bergeron (Tiverton, RI) and freshman Lucas Molloy (Lovell, ME) each singled in the game for their Owl team.

Anthony Batchelder (Enfield, ME) picked up the loss on the day, allowing seven runs on nine hits, while striking out one and walking three batters. Stephen Thorne (Dalhousie, NB),Ryan Thompson (East Millinocket, ME), Andy Brown (Princeton, ME), Brian Andrews (Fort Fairfield, ME), Carlos Villoria (Caracas, Venezuela), and Evan Kingsbury (Frankfort, ME) all saw time as relief. The UMPI pitchers allowed a total of 16 hits in the game, while the defense only committed one error in the field.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Owls dropped the 13-1 contest in seven innings.  Sophomore 1b Carlos Villoria earned the lone RBI of the game for the Owls, coming in the first inning of play. Thorne was hit by a pitch, and then stole second. Freshman 2b Cam Morrell (Harpswell, ME) placed a sacrifice bunt to advance Thorne to third base. Villoria then earned a sacrifice fly out to left field, scoring teammate Thorne to jump ahead of Ramapo 1-0. 

The Roadrunners answered back in the bottom of the second inning, plating five runs; they responded with six more runs in the third, and earned two
 in the fifth inning to tally the score and eventual victory at 13-1.  The Owls scattered three hits in the loss, while committing six fielding errors.  Lucas Molloy singled to left field in the top of the seventh to earn a hit in the game; DH 
Ted Walker (Caribou, ME) went 1-for-3 with a base-hit single, while Stephen Thorne singled, drew a walk, and plated a run for his Owl team.

Corey Harding earned the loss from the mound; he allowed 10 earned runs on 8 hits, while striking out one and walking five batters. Kingsbury, Thompson,Shane Smith (Farmington, ME) andMatt Nadeau (Auburn, ME) all saw time as relief for the Owls. 

UMPI returns to action on Sunday, March 27th, as they head to Fitchburg State in Fitchburg, Mass. to take on the Falcons in an afternoon double-header matchup. The first game is set to begin at 12:00 noon.
