Buena Vista, VA - The University of Maine at Presque Isle men's baseball team lost a pair of games at Southern Virginia University on Monday afternoon in non-conference play; with the loses, the Owls move to 0-3 on the season.
In the first game of the afternoon's doubleheader, the Owls battled to a 5-1 loss against SVU. After allowing two runs in the bottom of the first inning, UMPI rallied in the top of the third, getting on the scoreboard after Stephen Thorne (Dalhousie, NB) walked and found his way home for the un-earned run. The Knights answered back in the bottom of the same inning, earning two more runs on a four-hit inning taking the 4-1 lead. Southern Virginia scored again in the bottom of the sixth to capture the final 5-1 victory.
UMPI was lead by Carlos Villoria (Caracas, Venezuela), Matt Nadeau (Auburn, ME), James Cirell (Bingham, ME), and Ted Walker (Caribou, ME) who all earned base-hit singles in the game. Pitcher Corey Harding (Plymouth, ME) allowed 11 hits, walked just one and struck out three batters.
In the second game of the day, UMPI earned the 17-0 loss in five-innings. The Owls had no hits in the game as SVU hurler Mitch Mantle earned the no-hitter, striking out five and walking three. The Knights were able to score nine in the first inning and eight in the second to help put the game beyond reach.
The Owls return to action on Tuesday, February 22nd, as they travel to Hampden-Sydney College for a 3:00 pm game.
