FITCHBURG, Massachusetts - The University of Maine at Presque Isle baseball team dropped a pair of games in a doubleheader match-up against the Falcons of Fitchburg State College on Sunday afternoon at Riccards Field. With the 6-1 and 14-2 decisions, the Owls fall to 1-12 on the year, while Fitchburg State moves to 5-6 on the season.
The first game of the afternoon was held scoreless until the third inning of play when the Falcons scored two runs on two hits to take the 2-0 lead. Fitchburg struck again in the fourth, plating one run and then scored three more in the bottom of the fifth inning to earn the 6-0 lead.
The Owls scored their lone run in the top of the seventh inning; sophomore Stephen Thorne (Dalhousie, NB) singled to third base, earning a base-hit infield single, and then reached second on a throwing error. Thorne stole home and plated the run off a throwing error from the Fitchburg catcher.
Thorne led his team with a base hit single, while the Falcons scattered six hits scoring six runs. The UMPI defense committed six errors from the field in the game.
Sophomore hurler, Jake Fillebrown (Stoneham, ME), pitched a phenominal game from the mound, while earning the loss for his Owl team. Fillebrown allowed four earned runs, while striking out five batters and walking two in five innings of play. Freshman Seth Cote (Otis, ME) saw relief for one inning to finish the game.
In the second game of the afternoon, the Owls battled to the 14-2 loss. UMPI played a solid game from the start, jumping out to the 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of play; rf Shane Smith (Farmington, ME) singled to left field, followed by a single to right center by 2b Cam Morrell (Harpswell, ME), advancing Smith to third base. Sophomore 1b Carlos Villoria (Caracas, Venezuela) then earned a sacrifice ground out to third base, scoring Smith.
The Falcons answered in the bottom of the same inning, scoring two runs on one hit as the Owls committed three fielding errors in the inning. Fitchburg scored two more runs in the bottom of the third inning to take the 4-1 lead.
Senior Corey Harding (Plymouth, ME) drew a walk in the top of the fourth inning to get the Owls offense going; Harding then advanced to second on a
passed ball. Jake Fillebrown singled through the right side on a 2-2 count to earn an RBI in the game, scoring Harding to gain the team's second and final run of the game. Freshman Andrew Carter (Charlos, NB) followed up with a single up the left side of the field, advancing Fillebrown to second, but the Owls were forced out of the inning with two runners left on base.
The Falcons rattled off a big fifth inning effort, scoring 10 runs on eight hits and earning the eventual14-2 decision.
Smith, Morrell, Thorne, and Carter all singled in the game, while Fillebrown lead his team with an RBI single. The Owls earned five hits and committed five errors in the losing effort.
Freshman pitcher Dylan Worster (Howland, ME) earned his second loss of the year, allowing six earned runs in 4.2 innings from the mound. Worster struck out two batters, while walking four. Freshmen Andy Brown (Princeton, ME) and Evan Kingsbury (Frankfort, ME) both saw time in relief for UMPI.
The Owls return to action on Monday, March 28th, as they head to Gordon College in Wenham, Mass. to take on the fighting Scots in an afternoon non-conference doubleheader. The first game is set to begin at 1:00 pm.
