Owls Battle to 13-3 Loss at Daniel Webster College

NASHUA, New Hampshire - The University of Maine at Presque Isle men's baseball dropped a 13-3 decision on Friday afternoon against Daniel Webster College at Harvey Woods Field. With the loss, the Owls move to 2-14 on the season.

The Owls jumped out to the 1-0 lead in the top of the second asJames Cirell (Bingham, ME)singled to kick-off the UMPI inning.Alex Csiernik (Hamilton, Ontario)and Justin Bergeron (Tiverton, RI)both drew walks to load the bases with two-outs in the inning.Stephen Thorne (Dalhousie, NS)then earned an RBI single, scoring Cirell to put the Owls up 1-0.  With three players left on base, UMPI was forced out of the inning.

Daniel Webster tied the game in the bottom of the third, and earned two more in the fourth and one in the fifth to take the 4-1 lead. 

UMaine Presque Isle battled back, plating two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Carlos Villora (Caracas, Venezuela) led off the inning with a base-hit single, followed by a base-on-balls effort from Corey Harding (Plymouth, ME). Cirell flied out to centerfield for the first out of the inning. Csiernik drew his second walk of the ballgame to load the bases for the Owls. Ted Walker (Caribou, ME) came in to pinch hit for Seth Cote (Otis, ME) and drew a walk, earning an RBI to bring the score to 4-2. With the bases still loaded with one out in the inning, Bergeron earned a sacrifice ground out to the pitcher, scoring Harding for the second RBI of the game. The Owls ended the inning behind 4-3. 

The Eagles followed up the effort with a big inning in the bottom of the sixth, scoring nine runs on five hits and two UMPI errors to take the 13-3 lead and eventually victory.

The Owls were led by Thorne, who went 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Harding, Cirell, and Villoria all singled in the game and each plated a run in the losing effort.  Bergeron earned an RBI in the game for the Owls.

Sophomore pitcher Anthony Batchelder (Enfield, ME) picked up the loss on the day; Batchelder allowed three earned runs on five hits, while striking out three and walking five batters in five innings of work.  Evan Kingsbury (Frankfort, ME), Andy Brown (Princeton, ME), and Ryan Thompson (East Millinocket, ME), all saw time as relief for the Owls.

UMaine Presque Isle returns to action on Friday evening as they head to Lesley University to face the Lynx for a 7:00 pm non-conference match-up.
