Baseball Falls to Fisher in Conference Opener

LYNN, Massachusetts - The University of Maine at Presque Isle baseball team dropped two games to Fisher College on Saturday afternoon in the Sunrise Conference opening doubleheader; with the losses, the Owls move to 3-16 on the year and 0-2 in Sunrise Conference play.

In first game of the day, the Owls battled to a 10-6 loss to the Falcons. UMaine Presque Isle was led by freshman Ted Walker (Caribou, ME) who finished 3-for-3 in the game, plating two runs for his team. Matt Nadeau (Auburn, ME) went 2-for-5 for the Owls, including two RBI's and a plated run, while Justin Bergeron (Tiverton, RI) was 1-for-4 with two RBI's. Senior captain, Corey Harding (Plymouth, ME), had a solid 2-for-5 effort from the plate, including one RBI's and a plated run; centerfielder Stephen Thorne (Dalhousie, NB) went 1-for-4 with an RBI in the effort.

The Owls scattered 13 hits in the game in 41 at bats. Fisher scored first in the bottom of the third then UMPI tied the game at one a piece in the top of the fourth inning. The Falcons struck again in the bottom of the fourth with one run, then cracked opened the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring five key runs to take the 7-1 lead.  The Owls rallied to score three in the top of the sixth and two more in the seventh to come to within one run, but couldn't close the gap as Fisher pulled away in the bottom of the seventh to earn the 10-6 win.

Sophomore hurler Jake Fillebrown (Stoneham, ME) picked up the loss for UMPI; in 4.1 innings of action, Fillebrown allowed three earned runs, while striking out three and walking five. Andy Brown (Princeton, ME), Seth Cote (Otis, ME), and Thorne all saw time as relief for UMPI. 

In the second game of the afternoon, UMPI dropped an 11-0 decision to Fisher as the Falcons jumped out to a big nine run lead in the bottom of the first inning. Fisher scored two more in the bottom of the fourth to take the win in five innings of work.

Sophomore first baseman, Carlos Villoria (Caracas, Venezuela), led the Owls with a 2-for-2 effort from the plate, while Alex Csiernik (Hamilton, ON) finished 2-for-2 to help his team. 

Freshman Jordan Perry (Baileyville, ME) picked up the loss from the mound for UMPI; Perry allowed seven earned runs, while walking two batters. Evan Kingsbury (Frankfort, ME) saw relief in the first inning as he allowed one run off three hits. Brown and Ryan Thomspon (East Millinocket, ME) also saw action from the mound for the Owls.

The Owls return to action on Sunday, April 10th in a re-match conference doubleheader against the Falcons of Fisher College. The first gameof the afternoon is set for 12:00 noon.
