Owl Baseball Battles to 6-3 Loss at King's College

WILKES-BARRE, PA - The University of Maine at Presque Isle battled to a 6-3 loss against the Monarchs of Kings College in the first-ever meeting between the two schools on Saturday afternoon at Lip Field in the Betzler Athletic Complex. With the loss, the Owls move to 0-8 on the season, while the King's improve to 4-8.
King's took the early 1-0 lead in the first inning of play. The game then remained scoreless until UMPI answered back by scoring three runs in the top of the fourth inning. With an out on the board, freshman Ted Walker (Caribou, ME) singled into left field to start up the inning. Freshman Andrew Carter (Charlo, NB), then singled to right field, advancing Walker to third. Freshman catcher, Alex Csiernik (Hamilton, ON), then smacked an RBI double, plating Walker on the hit and advancing Carter to third base. SS, Justin Bergeron (Tiverton, RI), struck out swinging to give the Owls their second out of the inning. Freshman 2B, Cam Morrell (Harpswell, ME), reached first on an error, scoring Csiernik. LF, Josiah Brazier (Searsport, ME), followed with a single to left field but was left on base as the Owls were forced out of the inning after taking the 3-1 lead.
The Monarchs responded in the bottom half of the fifth, tying the game at 3-3. In the sixth inning of play, King's plated another two runs, and then added a final run in the bottom of the seventh to bring the game to 6-3.
The Owls were lead by Csiernik, who went 1-for-4 from the plate including the team's lone RBI in the game. Carter finished with a solid 3-for-4 effort, while Morrell was 2-for-4 in the game. The Owls earned 10 hits in 36 at bats.
Jake Fillebrown (Stoneham, ME) earned the loss from the mound; Fillebrown allowed six runs on 10 hits, while striking out eight and walking two. Sophomore Anthony Batchelder (Enfield, ME) saw relief in the eighth inning, allowing no runs and no hits.
The Owls return to the diamond on Sunday, March 20th, as they travel to Penn. State Worthington for a double-header non-conference match-up. The first game is set to begin at 1:00 pm.
