SALEM, Virginia - The University of Maine at Presque Isle dropped another game on the road in a 6-0 decision against the Maroons of Roanoke College on Wednesday evening at Kiwanis Field. With the loss, the Owls move to 0-5 on the season in non-conference play.
UMPI earned four hits on the day; they were led by freshman Carlos Villoria (Caracas, Venezuela) who went 2-for-4 from the plate, with a single to left field in the first inning and a single up the middle for the lone hit of the sixth inning. Captain Corey Harding (Plymouth, ME)and catcher Alex Csiernik (Hamilton, ON) each eslated a base-hit single on the day.
Lefty hurler, Dylan Worster (Howland, ME), earned the loss on the day, going six innings for his team. Worster allowed six runs on eight hits, while striking out two and walking just one batter. Sophomore Jake Fillebrown (Stoneham, ME) saw relief in the seventh and had a solid inning from the mound, allowing no hits. Freshman Shane Smith (Farmington, ME)relieved Fillebrown in the bottom of the eighth and allowed three hits with three at bats, loading the bases with no outs. Freshman Andrew Carter (Charlo, NB) came in for Smith in the same inning, and with three at bats, forced three back-to-back-to-back outs off infield plays.
The Maroons finished the game with 11 hits and no errors, while UMPI noted three errors in the game.
The Owls were rained out on Thursday, February 24th in a scheduled game at Ferrum College; they return to action on Friday afternoon in double-header action against Averett University of Danville, VA. The first game of the day starts at 1:00 pm, followed by a 3:30 pm match-up.
