Coach Smith Honored for 30+ Years of Service

Presque Isle, ME – It was a beautiful day at Park Family Field for the UMPI Invitational Cross Country Meet.  After the meet, Head coach Christopher Smith was honored by the UMPI's Athletic Department for his 30 plus years of service, with an engraved University of Maine at Presque Isle chair. Today Coach Smith started his 33rd year as a head coach at the University of Maine at Presque Isle.  In 1987 Smith started as a part-time Cross Country coach while finishing his second bachelor's degree. He was then hired full-time in 1989. 

In his time here Coach Smith has had many different accomplishments with his Cross Country teams. Including coaching his team to 19 Team Championships, while being named Coach of the Year 11 times. Most recently was named North Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year for Women's Cross Country.

Coach Smith is also UMPI's head Men and Women's Track and Field coach, helping start the program in 2017-18.  Also, the Associate Director of Wieden Hall, Smith put in many hours maintaining the facilities at UMPI. Including the Cross Country course that he puts many hours of his own time to prep for all the athletes.
