Wednesday, 06 January 2010 04:50 |
Presque Isle, ME - Senior co-captain Tyler Delaney (Truro, NS) was recently selected to the All-Canadian College Baseball Team - Canada's equivalent to our National All-American Team. Tyler was selected as the third team second baseman. T-Bone, as he's called by his teammates, set many single-season records for the Owls in 2009 and after just three seasons owns many UMPI career records. Tyler led the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) last year in triples and batted a team best .426; he was also selected to the NAIA Sunrise All-Conference Team and to the NCAA AD3I First Team as a second baseman. In the 2009 season, Delaney earned National Player of the Week honors for the week of March 30th - April 5th. In that week long stretch, the second baseman went 21-25 (.840) from the plate in the five game win streak for the Owls; during a three game stretch, he hit in 14 straight plate appearances. On the week, Tyler compiled 15 RBI's, scored 16 runs, smashed four doubles, four triples, and four homers while slugging 1.800. He also went 3-for-3 in stolen base attempts.
CONGRATULATIONS Tyler!

Owls Conclude Season at Home |
Thursday, 30 April 2009 02:00 |
The UMPI Owls baseball team completed their 2009 season with games at home; their first home games in over four years. The Owls hosted Bates College of Lewiston, Maine at local Presque Isle High School in a double header. It was a sunny, brisk and windy day with temperatures in the low 50's but a crowd of 50-60 people got to see the Owls play at home; many, seeing their first ever UMPI Owls baseball game. It was also Brandon Elie's (the lone senior on the team) only home games of his entire 4 year playing career; his parents were also in attendance.
With the script set the Owls almost pulled out game 2; Brandon Elie had pitched very well for 7 innings but was behind 4-1 in the bottom of the 7th. The Owls needed a rally to finish the season with a win and give Elie his fourth pitching win of the year. The Owls managed to get two runners on base, a homerun would now tie the game. At bat with 2 outs, Tyler Delaney, the Owls top hitter; leading the team in almost every offensive category including homeruns. Delaney was down in the count 1 ball - 2 strikes; WHAM! a well hit linedrive to the rightcenter field gap, both baserunners scored making it 4-3. Delaney, now the tying run, is at 2nd base. The team's second leading hitter is at bat; he is 3 for 3 on the day, hitting over .400 for the season. Just one more hit ties the game, a homerun wins the game, the hitter has already hit a homerun earlier in the game, has hit 4 HRs on the season, was the leading HR hitter the season before, CRACK! goes the bat, popout to 2nd base. Owls lose 4-3.
The Owls end their season with a GREAT last game; the only thing better of course would have been the 2-run homer to win the game. However, GREAT games aren't always won. The Owls played well and gave themselves a chance in the bottom of the 7th. It was a good ending to a record season for UMPI Baseball; 14 wins is believed to be the most ever (athletic archives are tough to find) by an UMPI baseball team. The Owls played more games than ever before, had a team batting average of well over .300, had 4 players make ALL CONFERENCE, have a player leading the nation in triples, and on and on, there are many more record-setting accomplishments. The next step is to keep improving, set goals, work hard. The returning players to the 2010 team will surely do just that; they know Coach Saucier expects nothing less.

Baseball - Virginia Trip 2009 |
Friday, 27 February 2009 05:06 |
UMPI’s first annual February break baseball trip wrapped up this past weekend; on the whole, we accomplished many good things. At the same time, we learned where we need further work as a team. Our goal is to be competitive in Division III anywhere in the country; and that takes time, but again, good things happened on this trip. On day 1, after having practiced in the gym since the semester started, we scored in the first inning of both games of our opening day double-header. In game 2 we out hit our opponent 10 – 9 but lost 7 - 2 in a close game; Ferrum didn’t pull ahead until the bottom of inning 5. Senior pitcther Brandon Elie, battled, as he always does and kept us close. Later in the week he would again come close to a win.
While many of the game scores do appear lopsided, several of our young pitchers did have successful innings. Max Mayer, Clint Carter, Brandon Boulware, and Jared Manzo (all left handed pitchers - 2 freshmen and 2 sophomores) earned valuable time on the mound; and that will surely pay-off come the New York City trip. Another freshman pitcher, Caleb Hale, made 2 starts and 2 relief appearances. After a shaky introduction to college baseball (a game 1 start) he pitched well in both relief appearances and did a superb job in a 6 – 0 loss to Southern Virginia University. In 6 innings he allowed only 4 hits and 4 earned runs; we just couldn’t manage any offense in that game.
Three of our players (Brandon Elie, Corey Harding, and Seth Dorr) each managed to hit their first career homerun (high school or college); as each also managed multiple hits during the week. The big hitter for the week was returning second team All Independent – All American, Junior, Tyler Delaney. Tyler had a .310 batting average for the week with 2 doubles, a homerun, and 5 RBI. Junior DJ Charette and AJ Pennartz also had multiple hits for the week as did freshman right fielder Tyson Tash.
The best opportunity for a win was in game 8 of the week. Senior pitcher and co-captain, Brandon Elie was leading 4 – 3 in the fifth inning with 2 outs and the bases loaded. A blooper, that received some miscommunication among fielders put SVU ahead to stay. But in all, with circumstances considered, we are much more ready to begin conference play than we were a year ago. We open conference play on the cape (Mass.) March 21 against SUNY Canton with a 4 game series, then play in NY City for the week of 3/23 through 3/27.
