Owl Baseball Players Selected to AD3I Team

Three different UMPI Owl baseball players were chosen by the coaches of the NCAA Division III Independents as the representatives of their all conference team.  Two Owl players were chosen to the first team and one to the second team; one of these Owl players was chosen to both teams.  Corey Harding, a two sport athlete at UMPI, was selected as the 1st Team Utility Player.  Harding (Plymouth, Me.) played all positions during the year except catcher and for those efforts was recognized as the top utility player among all the independent teams.  Corey finished the year with a .347 batting average, had 7 doubles, 2 triples, and a homerun; he scored 22 runs, drove in 19, and was 13 for 13 in stolen base attempts.  Harding was also chosen to the AD3I all conference 2nd team as a pitcher; one of only two players to be selected twice.  On the mound Harding appeared in 12 games,  finished with a 4-1 record (4-0 in the Sunrise Conference).  He allowed 43 hits in 48 innings and struck out 40 hitters.  His lone loss of the season was his first start of the year against Roanoke College in February.

The other Owl player to garner a 1st Team selection was Tyler Delaney (2B), whose offensive statistics rank him nationally in many categories.  Tyler completed the season with a .426 batting average; he had 11 doubles, 9 triples, and 6 homeruns.  He scored 42 runs, drove in 40, and was 18 for 20 in stolen bases.  Delaney leads the NAIA nationally in triples.  Tyler was a 2nd team selection a year ago.

The third Owl player to be chosen was AJ Pennartz, he was the 2nd Team selection at 3B.  Pennartz was second to Delaney in most of the offensive categories, he batted .391, had 9 doubles, 4 triples, and 4 homeruns.  He scored 28 runs and had 27 RBIs.  AJ missed five games for a family wedding so his numbers might have even been better.

CONGRATULATIONS to these three players, who all return next season.

Sports Banquet Awards

The University of Maine at Presque Isle hosted its annual Sports Banquet - Award Ceremony on 5/6/09 and a couple of UMPI baseball players took home  some of the  top honors.  Receiving the team awards were Seth Dorr (Most Inspirational Player), Tyson Tash (Rookie of the Year), and Tyler Delaney earned the Most Valuable Player Award.  Delaney lead the team in almost every offensive (hitting/running) category and ranks high nationally in several of them, he leads the nation in triples;  these accomplishments helped him take home the TOP HONOR - Male Athlete of the Year.  On the academic side, Delaney also earned the Rising Star Award within the Athletic Training Major for his excellent GPA and dedication to the Athletic Training Program.

Dave deKay, the baseball team's student-coach and former player, won the Stanley H. Small Award and received the Student Trainer of the Year Award; these are two of the top awards given each year and represent the best of the best among student-athletes at the University of Maine at Presque Isle.  Coach deKay recently received a Graduate Assistant position in Athletic Training at Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia. Congratulations to both Dave & Tyler.
